It’s In Your Head

In a world teeming with violent images, harsh news, back-biting, gossip, visions of terror, war and fear-mongering it is no wonder that many Christians find our sensitivities dulled by the onslaught of the filth we come into contact with. Living on this side of heaven should come with a warning label should it not? It would take a fast of supernatural and epic proportions to be able to completely withdraw ourselves from the world around- a world filled to the brim with blood, violence, sex, and sin of unmeasurable proportions. Even if we don’t actively participate in it, we still arguably are immersed in it everywhere we go.

Some of it we avoid, some we tolerate, some we aid, some of it we start.

We’re called to a higher way. Even living among the filth we can elevate our minds above the fray.

We can meditate on better.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8

Today I challenge you dear ones to examine what we are thinking on. What are we willfully putting in our minds?

What books, shows, news stations, magazines?

What songs are we listening to, which artists, what podcasts?

What movies, tv shows, YouTube channels do we spend time watching?

Do they pass the Biblical test? Are they putting forth noble tenets, are they lovely or admirable? How pure are they? How excellent?

There can be no hedging with this battleground we call our mind. We must feed it a worthwhile and upright diet. Filth, sin, impurity, trash must not be allowed. As Daughters of God we are called to the cleaner stuff, the pure mind, an upright and sanctified way of thinking. We cannot possibly expect Godly output if we are taking in poison. Garbage in garbage out as the saying goes.

Rather, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” –Colossians 3:2

I encourage you to set up your scriptural litmus test for everything you let in your head. Make the checklist, mark off the qualifications, throw out whatever doesn’t pass muster. Our minds depend on our vigilance!
